What is a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)?
An RMD is the minimum amount you must withdraw from your Traditional TSP account each year after reaching age 73. The IRS requires this because you've been deferring taxes on these contributions, and they want to start collecting that tax revenue.
Key RMD Rules for TSP
- Starting Age: Age 73 (for those born 1951-1959). Age 75 for those born 1960 or later.
- First RMD Deadline: April 1 of the year after you turn 73
- Annual Deadline: December 31 each subsequent year
- Penalty for Missing: 25% of the amount not withdrawn
- Roth TSP: NOT subject to RMDs during your lifetime
How RMDs Are Calculated
The IRS uses a simple formula:
The life expectancy factor comes from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (Table III). Here are common factors:
| Age | Factor | Distribution % |
|---|---|---|
| 73 | 26.5 | 3.77% |
| 74 | 25.5 | 3.92% |
| 75 | 24.6 | 4.07% |
| 80 | 20.2 | 4.95% |
| 85 | 16.0 | 6.25% |
| 90 | 11.4 | 8.77% |
