Understanding WEP and GPO

Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP)

WEP reduces your Social Security benefit if you receive a pension from work where you didn't pay Social Security taxes AND you also have enough Social Security credits to qualify for benefits.

WEP Formula (Simplified):

Standard SS formula uses: 90% of first bend point
WEP formula uses: 40% of first bend point (reduction of 50%)

Maximum reduction in 2026: $557/month
Reduction decreases with more years of substantial earnings

Government Pension Offset (GPO)

GPO affects spousal or survivor benefits. If you receive a government pension, your spousal/Social Security benefit is reduced by 2/3 of your government pension amount.

Scenario Impact
Your FERS pension: $2,400/month GPO reduction: $1,600/month (2/3)
Spousal benefit you'd receive: $1,200/month After GPO: $0 (fully offset)
