The Special Retirement Supplement bridges the gap between FERS retirement and Social Security eligibility
What is the FERS Special Retirement Supplement?
The Special Retirement Supplement (SRS) is a unique benefit available to FERS employees who retire before age 62 with at least 30 years of service (or meet other early retirement criteria). It's designed to bridge the financial gap between your FERS retirement and when you become eligible for Social Security benefits at age 62.
How is SRS Calculated?
The SRS formula estimates what your Social Security benefit would be at age 62, then prorates it based on your years of FERS service compared to your total working career:
Estimated SS at 62 × (Years of FERS Service ÷ Total Working Years)
Where Total Working Years = 62 - Your Starting Work Age
Who Qualifies for SRS?
- Immediate Retirement: Must retire under immediate (not deferred) retirement
- Age Requirements: Must be between your Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) and 62
- Service Requirements: At least 30 years of service, or meet MRA+10 rules
- Law Enforcement/Firefighters: Special category employees with 20+ years qualify regardless of age
Earnings Limit Warning
If you work after retirement, your SRS may be reduced by $1 for every $2 you earn above the annual limit ($21,240 in 2026). This is separate from the Social Security earnings test.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Unlike your regular FERS pension, the Special Retirement Supplement is NOT adjusted for Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). The amount you start with is what you'll receive until age 62, unless reduced by post-retirement earnings.
No. The SRS is only available to those who retire BEFORE age 62. If you retire at 62 or later, you're immediately eligible for Social Security, so there's no "gap" to bridge.
This calculator provides an estimate based on simplified formulas. The actual SRS calculation uses your complete earnings history and Social Security Administration records. For precise figures, request an official estimate from OPM or SSA before retiring.

Who typically qualifies
Many FERS retirees who separate before age 62 with an unreduced immediate annuity may receive SRS until Social Security age—subject to earnings tests.
How estimates differ from SSA
SRS uses SSA earnings history concepts but is administered by OPM; your SSA statement is still the anchor for Social Security at 62+.
Earnings test reminder
Post-retirement wages can reduce or eliminate SRS—plan for part-time work or private-sector income carefully.
Modeling notes
- SRS is not COLA-adjusted like the basic annuity.
- Actual SRS requires full earnings history and OPM’s calculation—not a single shortcut formula.
